[News Today] Deepfake controversy over chatbot Grok
2026.01.15 16:54
X has rolled out its AI chatbot Grok worldwide, but the service is facing backlash over allegations it is fueling the spread of sexually exploitative deepfake content. The Korean government has now stepped in, urging the platform to strengthen protections for minors and users.
[REPORT]
Social media platform X, owned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The platform introduced a feature that allows easy creation of deepfake images using its AI chatbot Grok, but it's been stirring a firestorm of controversy.
Entering a simple command to a photo posted on X fabricates it into sexual material.
This option that allows one to generate such images without related parties' consent has triggered an avalanche of protests.
Controversy over the mass production of sexually exploitative deepfake materials especially those involving women and children has spread across the globe.
The South Korean government has also rolled up its sleeve.
The Korea Media and Communications Commission has asked X to draft youth access restriction and management measures and report back the results.
It also made it clear that the production, distribution and consumption of sexually exploitative deepfake materials against the will of involved parties is subject to criminal punishment.
X responded by saying it will present a safeguard plan within two weeks. The commission will then examine its adequacy and then take follow up steps.
