South Korean boy band BTS has conquered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with its fifth album, “ARIRANG,” following its success on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Billboard announced on Monday, local time, that the title track of the fifth album, “Swim,” debuted at No. 1, outperforming Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” and Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need.” This marks BTS’s seventh time topping the Hot 100 chart.
Since first achieving a K-pop milestone with “Dynamite” in 2020, BTS has also reached No. 1 with “Savage Love” and “Life Goes On” in 2020, “Butter” in 2021, “Permission to Dance” in 2021, and “My Universe” in 2021.
According to Billboard, with seven Hot 100 No. 1s, BTS ranks fifth among groups with the most 100 chart-toppers since the chart began in August 1958, following The Beatles (20 times), The Supremes (12 times), Bee Gees (9 times), and The Rolling Stones (8 times).
The Hot 100 is Billboard’s premier singles chart, calculated based on a combination of U.S. streaming data, radio airplay, and sales figures.
During the tracking week, Swim recorded 15.3 million streams, 25.8 million in radio airplay audience impressions, and 154,000 combined digital and physical single sales. It also became the 1,190th track to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100 and the 88th song to debut at No. 1
Swim also topped the Digital Song Sales chart while ranking No. 2 on Streaming Songs and No. 18 on Radio Songs.
With the popularity of the fifth album ARIRANG, other tracks besides the title track Swim are also expected to enter the Hot 100 chart.
Swim is an alternative pop track expressing the attitude of continuing to move forward and swim through life’s waves without stopping. The song features lively old-school drums, lo-fi synthesizers, powerful bass, and warm electric guitar.
